Monday's Dogs
"Saving one dog's life won't change the world, but it will make a world of difference for that dog"
CRI EZine Date: November 26, 2007 / Issue #8

Pic of the Week:

Deb adopted "Red" a female from northeast TX that was on Monday's Dogs a few weeks ago. "Red" has been renamed Lucy in honor of the famous redhead Lucille Ball. Deb flew Lucy up to PA a week ago yesterday. Lucy is learning to love her crate but still prefers the recliner.

We are kicking off our 2007 campaign to give Catahoulas a Home for the Holidays.  While the Holiday Season to us means family, friends and good times, to dogs in shelters it means certain death.  Many shelters euthanize some, if not ALL, of their dogs just before Christmas since there is no one to come in to feed and care for them over the holidays.  This year we'd like to change that for as many Catahoulas as we can, but we can't do it without YOUR help.

If you have ever considered fostering or volunteering for a transport, now is the time.  What better way to give back this season than to give life to a dog in desperate need? If you can not foster or transport, please consider Sponsoring a dog.  You can donate in the memory of a loved one, a pet or as a gift in the name of a friend.  We need all our Rescue Angels help to give our Catahoulas in need a Home For The Holidays.  Monday's Dogs has SAVED over 315 dogs so far this year.  Our goal is 365!  That's one dog saved for every day of the year!  Please help us get there.

*Please Remember*: By adopting one of our foster dogs you save 2 lives! It frees up space for a dog in a kill shelter that needs to be pulled and vetted. If our foster dogs don't get homes, we have no room to pull any of the dogs that are listed below (most of which need vetting and evaluations by our volunteers). Help us Help more dogs, check out the links above...Adopt a Foster Dog!

The dogs listed below have One Week Or Less to Live.  Without Foster or Adoptive homes for these dogs to go to, Catahoula Rescue Inc. can not pull these dogs from the shelter and save their lives.  Please Contact the Reps listed ASAP if you can help save one of these dogs.

Lady
St. Clairsville, OH

Adopt Me

Lady used to belong to a thoughtless owner who put a puppy collar on her, but neglected to replace it with a bigger one when she grew. The collar was embedded in her neck by the time the dog warden confiscated Lady from her owner. Poor Lady was skinny and starving when she got to the pound, but she has gained some weight and gone to the vet for her shots and to get the puppy collar removed. Unfortunately, the pound is very full, and they will have to kill some dogs soon to make room for the ones coming in. Lady needs a foster or forever home so she can be safe. She is a sweet, happy and affectionate girl who will make a wonderful companion. Please help us save Lady!

Adopt Me

This cute little pup was playing with some kids and jumped up on one. The kid got a little scratch, and his parents flipped out and called the animal control officers, who came, threw the puppy in the paddy wagon, took him to the pound and locked him up in solitary confinement for 10 days. His time is up, but seems no one is claiming him. He has beautiful blue eyes - his body is cream color while his face has some white mixed with the cream. He is a sweet pup that doesn't understand why he is in jail and what he did that was so wrong. Please don't let this sweet puppy die...call Mary today!

~Coachella~
California Thousand Palms 92276
805-310-3360
Adopt Me

This little girl is scared to death at the shelter. A kind sponsor has offered to pay her bail and transport her to a foster or forever home in the Los Angeles/San Diego, CA area. Coachella is very submissive: we think she was beaten by her previous owners. She is very cautious when meeting strangers or going to new places, but she does want to love and be loved. If you sit down on the ground and wait for her to come to you, she will cuddle up to you for a head rub. Coachella has had a hard life so far... at about nine months old, she has had a litter of pups, she has some cuts that are healing up, and she is very thin. She is receiving good care at the shelter, but her time there is almost up, and she needs a guardian angel to take her in.

Leo
Sacramento SPCA California
916-383-7387
Adopt Me

Leo is an older Catahoula, fully vetted. He is suffering from kennel stress, as being locked up at the shelter seems to be overwhelming him. Leo would do best as an only dog. He is on limited time.Leo is fun and frisky. He has lots of energy and loves to run like crazy. His ideal home should include and active person who can give Leo the vigorous daily exercise he needs -- like a long run or hike. Leo is a VERY smart boy who knows commands like 'sit,' 'down' and 'stay.' He walks well on his leash and is very sweet, gentle and easy to handle. Leo was found as a stray at Big Horn and Laguna Boulevard in Elk Grove. At five years old, Leo qualifies for our Senior Companion program where all adoption fees are waived if the adopter is over the age of 60. km

Bowser
FL

Adopt Me

Meet Bowser: at almost three years old, he weighs sixty-five pounds, is house trained, and is GREAT with kids, other dogs & cats. He is very loving and thinks he is a lap dog. Bowser listens well and is trained to sit and stay and walks well on a leash. Bowser's owners had to move to an apartment where they can not keep him. They will be forced to take him to the shelter in a week. Poor Bowser deserves better than this! He is a well adjusted, well behaved boy who will make an easy transition into being your pet. Please help us save this wonderful dog!

Cal
Northern Louisiana
979-561-8155
Adopt Me

This beautiful blue leopard boy is Cal. He was found lying in the road, almost dead. A good samaritan picked him up and took him home. He was too weak to hold up his head. Cal's rescuer, Kerry, took him to the vet, but could not afford more than an exam. The vet found no broken bones. He instructed Kerry to syringe feed Cal baby food and milk. For two days Kerry watched Cal around the clock, lying with him on the floor and feeding him with a syringe. Finally, Cal had enough strength to move just a bit and used it to snuggle closer to Kerry. The next day he was able to hold up his head and drink on his own. It has only been a week, but Cal is now able to stand on his own, eat, and go outside to potty. Once she knew he was going to live, Kerry contacted Catahoula Rescue. Kerry is not a dog person and doesn't have the money to provide for Cal. Catahoula Rescue can cover his medical needs, but we need a foster home for him.

DOG TIPS

-DOGS ARE HARD TO GIFT WRAP-
If you are thinking of giving a dog as a gift this year, please make sure the recipient is in on the decision.  Surprising someone with a dog is like giving someone a gift wrapped human child.  Dogs live on average 8-16 years!  Once the happiness of the puppy wears off then comes the next 8-16 years of training, walks, vet and food bills.  It is not something to enter into lightly.  There is also the question of temperament and lifestyle, is it the type of dog they want and does it fit into their routine?  Many dogs given as surprise gifts end up in shelters within weeks or months of Christmas. This could be avoided if people made sure that the person or family the dog is intended for, has discussed and even helps participate in the choosing of this particular present.

Jackson

Southeast Texas
979-561-8155

A Catahoula Rescue foster home in Canada has offered to take Jackson, but Canada is a long way from southeast Texas. The only way to get Jackson to his foster home is to fly him. This will cost about $300. Jackson needs sponsors to help get him to his new foster home for Christmas. This little boy was left in the yard of one of our fostermom's. He's only about 5 months old and very friendly. He's friendly with her cats and other dogs, but one of her other foster dogs doesn't like him. This boy is in desparate need of another foster or adopter.

New Beginnings
From Mary D. CRI Founder (TX)

Lily Sept. 4th 2007 (At Shelter)

Here's a before and after picture of Lily. The one of her standing is when she first came into rescue. She was a starving stray that was picked up by Bay City animal control. The impound held her for a week until I could find her a foster home. I met a volunteer half way to get her from Bay City and then took Lily to her foster home in Luling, TX. She was there for just over a week when she became lethargic. I picked her up from the foster family and brought her home. She was running a 105 degree temperature and her gums were as white as a sheet of paper. I took Lily to my vet, the Fayette County Vet clinic in La Grange. They ran some blood tests and discovered that she was severely anemic. Her red cell count was at 8%. Normal is about 45%. Lily required a blood transfusion and a number of medications, but she recovered.

Lily had been posted on Monday's Dogs when she was at the impound waiting for rescue. Curt, a young man in Nebraska, saw her on Monday's Dogs and knew she was the one for him. He said she looked like a good dog that needed someone to take care of her. Curt contacted Catahoula Rescue and made arrangements to adopt Lily. He already had a November trip to Texas planned. That was perfect as it gave Lily time to recover and gain weight. Lily met Curt and went home with him on Sunday, November 4th.

FOSTER OF THE WEEK

RJ
NEW YORK
406-323-3519
Adopt Me

RJ is a wonderful boy that was given up by his family. Catahoula Rescue Inc. rescued him from the pound, and he has been in foster care quite a while now, waiting for his forever home. He is a wonderful dog: a little reserved at first, but he wins everyone's heart once they get acquainted. Please consider RJ, we believe he is a purebred. His foster Mom really thinks he is pretty special and would be happy to tell you more about him. RJ is wondering why no one has wanted him for their family dog. He is a great boy
